Veronese Pergola

The older vineyards have been planted with the historical and classical system of the Veronese pergola which allows 1500 - 2000 vines to be planted per hectare.

The Veronese pergola in Valpolicella and in the areas of Bardolino as well as the tendone in the Soave area (where the vines are grown parallel to the ground) have allowed the maximum yield from the land.
In this system the vines are grown with 1.2m - 1.5m gap between each vine and a distance of 4m - 4.5m between the rows.

Guyot

In the new vineyards, the Guyot system has been used.
This system, through a denser planting of the vines, allows 4000 - 4500 vines to be planted per hectare.

The system is part of the wine-growing tradition and is currently the most widely used in the world. In this system the vines are planted with 2.2m - 3m distance between the rows and 1m between the vines.

The Guyot was present in the Vapolicella but was later replaced by the pergola which gave a higher yield per hectare. Practises then reverted back to using the pergola when there was a higher emphasis on quality rather than quantity.
